About

James Alan McPherson Park is a community recreational facility located at 1858 7th Avenue Court in Iowa City, Iowa, formerly known as Creekside Park before its renaming in 2021 to honor the distinguished author and University of Iowa Writers’ Workshop professor. The park features a playground, basketball court, baseball field, picnic shelter, and community orchard across its 2.3 acres, with amenities designed for accessibility including ADA-compliant pathways and inclusive playground features. The park was renamed to honor James Alan McPherson, the first African-American writer to win the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction and a respected Iowa City resident who embodied community values until his death in 2016.
